At least three security members died and five others were injured this Monday following an attack against the headquarters of the Federal Police in Peshawar, the provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, northwest Pakistan, the force reported. According to information from the Xinhua Agency accessed by the Argentine News Agency, the Inspector General of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police, Zulfiqar Hameed, told the press that a suicide bomber detonated his explosive vest at the main entrance of the Federal Police headquarters, formerly known as the Frontier Police. After the attack, two terrorists entered the initial area of the headquarters, but on-duty guards shot them dead on the spot, Hameed added, who later stated that one of the two terrorists killed was a suicide bomber, so his vest exploded after the shootout. Eyewitnesses told Xinhua that they heard intense gunfire after two explosions occurred in the area, while the Police, security forces, and rescue teams quickly rushed to the site and the injured were taken to a nearby hospital. Meanwhile, the Police blocked access roads to the area and asked citizens to remain vigilant and avoid moving around the region unnecessarily. Additionally, security forces launched a search and cordon operation in the area and within the headquarters, while no group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet. The Frontier Police, which previously was in charge of guaranteeing the security of the tribal belt in the northwest region, was renamed the Federal Police by an ordinance enacted this July, extending its jurisdiction to the entire country. Later, in September, the federal government announced plans to move the Federal Police headquarters from Peshawar to Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan. The Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif, strongly condemned the terrorist attack, stating: 'We will thwart the evil plans of the terrorists attacking Pakistan's sovereignty.'
